I saw A History of Violence the other night, and it was absolutely brilliant. Cronenberg crafted what seemed to be such a simple sort of story which at the same time managed to comment on the mythology (and fallacy?) of the American dream, using the iconography of pop culture and cinema–Norman Rockwell, teen dramas, Coppola’s The Godfather, Tarrantino, comic book superheroes–to posit the theory that all of these diverse aspects of Americana spring from the same, dark place. The protagonist: Tom Stall. What a fascinating name.
