It deeply pains me to say this, as much as it deeply pained me to see it, but Tim Burton’s version of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, one of the greatest musicals ever written, is absolutely dreadful. I could go on for hours about everything that Tim Burton does so horribly wrong here, from directorial choices right down to simple casting issues, but really, what’s the point?
If you are curious about seeing this truly great show, give the film a miss, and look no further than the PBS recording of the original production, available on DVD.
